There’s money in homestay: Dr Leo

MUKAH: Mukah MP Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Leo Toyad has called on all three smart communities (k-Bestari) in Balingian state constituency to venture into homestay programme to widen their income base.Dr Leo made the call when he spoke as guest-of-honour at the k-Bestari Balingian Appreciation Dinner held at Kingwood Resort Mukah here. The three smart communities in Balingian state constituency are k-Bestari Balingian, k-Bestari Kampung Jebungan and k-Bestari Kampung Judan.

It is imperative that all smart communities in Balingian state constituency venture into homestay programmer for better income".

Secondly, this homestay programme will also motivate the communities to clean, spruce up and beautify their homes and villages to create a healthy and peaceful living environment as these will attract more visitors".

Additionally, the homestay programmer will become a suitable platform for the local community to meet and interact with outsiders, to find better ways to develop their community progressively,” said Dr Leo, stressing that smart community members should also become Friends of Environment (Rakan Alam Sekitar) to create a green and clean environment conducive for healthy living.

Dr Leo said members of the smart communities were the movers and agents of development, and as such they should always be proactive, creative and innovative in planning and organizing their activities.

He called on them to grab the economic spin-offs in the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) as well as attract more youths to become their members to create quality human capital and to nurture continuity in leadership.

Dr Leo, who is also president of the Federation of Melanau Association Sarawak (FMAS), announced a grant of RM15,000 from the Chief Minister-cum-Banning assemblyman fund, to be channeled through FMAS, and divided equally among the three smart communities for promotion of cultural activities. Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is the assemblyman for Balingian.

At the dinner, Leo also presented appreciation certificates to office bearers and committee members of the three smart communities for their services and commitment over the years.

In his welcoming speech, Mukah District Information officer Muhammad Alwi (also organizing chairman) said his department planned to increase the number of smart communities in Balingian to cater for encouraging demand from grassroots.

The dinner was also attended by Mukah District Officer Mohamad Nawawi, SAO Albania Linus Lukong of Balingian sub-district, Dalat District Information officer Mohd Khalid Ainie, Matu District Information officer Zaini Morshidi, Penghulu Wee Kee Chuan, k-Bestari Balingian chairman Penghulu Shahdan Sahari, k-Bestari Kampung Jebungan chairman Kudum Dillah and k-Bestari Kampung Judan chairman Jeraee Tagasan.

GATE EXTRA INCOME FROM HOMESTAY PROGRAMME

NEGERI SEMBILAN folk who have homes in suburban and rural areas and have since moved to cities, have been told to take part in the thriving homestay programmer in the state.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has asked these owners to form partnerships with the state tourism authorities and homestay operators to promote tourism.

He said owners could lease their homes to these parties and allow them to be leased to tourists rather than letting them remain vacant.

You can lease your homes on a time-sharing basis. You can also talk to village cooperatives and earn some income through homestay programmes,” he said.

Mohamad said this after launching the Kg Pachitan Homestay programme in Port Dickson recently.

Kg Pachitan is the only village where the villagers are all Javanese and still practise age-old traditions.

The homestay programme was introduced by the Tourism and Rural and Regional Development ministries in 2000 to allow rural folk to earn some form of income from homestay programmes.

Under the programme, visitors will be able to experience the full spectrum of village life as living with their hosts.

They would have a taste of the laid-back kampung lifestyle, learn how to prepare kampung dishes, play traditional games such as kite-flying, top-spinning and congkak and enjoy the fruit season.

Mohamad also advised homestay operators to treat tourists well. “Make sure that they feel welcome and that your homes are clean. If these people go back happy, they would definitely promote your homestay programme to their friends,” he said.

Earlier, Kampung Pachitan Homestay chairman Bunandar Bakat said the villagers earned RM330,440 in the first nine months of this year from the various tourism products.

We do not have forests, rivers or the sea but we have good products and human capital and that is why tourists keep coming back here,” he said.

Bunandar said the villagers made RM185,000 in 2007 and this increased to RM205,000 the following year.

The number of tourists also increased from 1,250 to 2,319 during the corresponding period. The number of tourists arrivals registered in the first 10 months of this year was 3,503 with 476 being foreigners. Most of the tourists were from Singaporee and parts of Europe.

We are confident that we will be able to earn RM400,000 by the end of this year,” he said.

At the launch, the Negri Sembilan Tourism Action Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indonesia’s PT Sementa Primindo Asia Wisata to promote the homestay programme in Indonesia.

The programme would be promoted in schools and the republic’s institutions of higher learning.

The council was represented by its general manager Badrulhisham Abd Rahman while Zul Herman signed on behalf of PT Sementa Primindo Asia Wisata.

Sabah Women's Advisory Council (MPWS) Chairperson, Datuk Asnimar Sukardi, said all families from far and near are welcome to participate in the event which is part of the month-long State-level Women's Day celebration.

"Activities which bring families together are ways to cement family bonding and strengthen the family institution. There will be a fun-filled bazaar in the vicinity of Wisma Wanita to add to the revelry," she said.

Banners on the event have been put up near Wisma Wanita and Karamunsing. The event is also being publicised via the quiz at Sabah FM.

Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun, will flag off the family walk after receiving the Malaysian and State Flags from two veteran lady walkers - Elizabeth Maurice and Clarice Mojigoh - who will walk all the way from Tambunan and reach Wisma Wanita by 7am.

Asnimar, who is Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, said Elizabeth, who works at the Fifth Brigade Camp, Lok Kawi, and Clarice, a nurse, offered to play a role in the family walk.

Logistics for their trip to Tambunan and the walk from Tambunan to the State capital will be taken care of by military vehicles. The duo will be escorted by police.

Based on their schedule, Elizabeth and Clarice will leave Donggongon, Penampang for Tambunan at 4pm on Nov 19 (Thursday) and arrive at the Tambunan Resthouse after one-and-a-half hours.

The ladies will stay overnight at the resthouse before setting off on the next course of their journey from the Tambunan District Office at 4am on Nov 20 (Friday). Meanwhile, organising chairperson Mariati Robert said MPWS has the support of Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and the Federal Youth and Sports Department in organising the event.

"Mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim said DBKK enforcement personnel will ensure that it is a litter-free event by providing dustbins at the venue. We are also grateful to the Police who will help out with the traffic flow," she said.

According to Mariati, the Federal Youth and Sports Department will conduct a senamrobic activity (aerobic exercise) for all participants before the walk starts.

TYPES OF HOMESTAYS

BASIC MATTER

Homestay scenarios can range from a completely immersive family experience, to a very basic room rental. Depending on the age of the student, homestays can be paid or unpaid.

In the immersive family experience a homestay student lives, eats, and shares the majority of their time in the host country with the hosts and their family. Family events such as dining out, amusement parks, camping, travel, etc. usually involve the host student who may or may not be expected to pay a portion for the participation (tickets, parking, gas, travel expenses, et al.) The student is invited to participate in Holiday festivities (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) and family events (weddings, birthdays, etc.)

At the other end of the spectrum, students may simply be renting a room within a private home with minimal supervision from a host or family.

Additionally, there are a working homestay agreements where a student is expected to perform duties such as yard work, farm work, babysitting, maid services - usually in exchange for accommodation fees or as part of.
